“Afrobeats is used to describe African musicians, not a style of music” – Davido
Renowned musician Davido recently weighed in on the distinction between Afrobeats and RnB, shedding light on his perspective regarding these popular music genres.
Previously, Wizkid had expressed his reluctance to be categorized solely as an Afrobeat artist, urging fans of the genre to steer clear of his upcoming release.
A resurfaced video featured Davido discussing the disparities between RnB and Afrobeats. In the clip, he referenced R&B vocalists such as Johnny Drille and Chike, asserting that certain tracks in his repertoire fall under the RnB category.
Davido elucidated his view that Afrobeats encompasses a broader spectrum, representing African musicians rather than adhering strictly to a defined musical style.
He also highlighted the case of Odumodublvck, an African-born hip-hop artist categorized as an Afrobeat artist despite his alignment with straight drill music. Davido underscored the roots of Afrobeat in the pioneering work of Fela, emphasizing its original sound and cultural significance.
