Army probes killing of police Inspector by soldiers over traffic gridlock in Lagos

Army probes killing of police Inspector by soldiers over traffic gridlock in Lagos

The Nigerian Army has responded to reports that Inspector Monday Orukpe was tortured and killed by soldiers on Wednesday, Aug 3, during a dispute over traffic along Lagos/Badagry Expressway.

We shared the story about how soldiers, while on their way from Ojo to the Military Ordinance School in Ojo, allegedly attacked some officers who manage traffic along Lagos-Badagry Expressway. According to reports, the military officers had attacked the officers to stop their coastal bus from being stuck in traffic. The alleged assaults on the officers led to the death one of the officers, now identified as Inspector Monday Orukpe.

Today, August 5, was the release of Major Olaniyi Osoba’s statement. He expressed sympathy with Ojo Police Division members and the victims’ family. The Division has established a Board of Inquiry in order to investigate the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.

He said that at the end of the investigation, anyone found culpable will be made to face the full wrath of the disciplinary provisions. The statement reads;

”The attention of the 81 Division has been drawn to a story online over the unfortunate incident that occurred between some soldiers and policemen around Ojo in Lagos resulting in the loss of the life of a police officer.

The Division is already in touch with the Lagos State Police Command to resolve the matter. This incident is highly regrettable given the Division’s disposition and zero tolerance for any misconduct.

Accordingly, the Division has instituted a Board of Inquiry to unravel the circumstance surrounding the unfortunate incident

At the end of the investigation, anyone found culpable will be made to face the full wrath of the disciplinary provisions.

Consequently, the Division wishes to commiserate with the Ojo Police Division and members of the family of the victim.”
