Ian Wright was left disappointed after getting his first look at Lucas Perez in an Arsenal shirt.
The Spanish striker, who joined the club shortly before the transfer deadline, made his debut for the Gunners in the 2-1 win over Southampton.
It was hoped that the £17million signing from Deportivo La Coruna would provide competition for centre-forward Olivier Giroud, however his performance and positioning against Saints suggest Arsene Wenger may have recruited yet another wide attacker.
‘Arsenal need a striker. I thought we would see someone more direct. Hopefully that will happen,’ said Wright in his analysis of Perez’s performance on Match of the Day.
The Arsenal legend said that he was of the understanding that Arsene Wenger has signed a striker ‘who would be on the shoulders of the last defender.’
However after seeing Perez play out wide and look to cut in, Wright concluded: ‘It seemed to me that he’s a winger.’
