Bangladesh’s ex-PM investigated for murder
A murder investigation has been launched against Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the police shooting of a man during recent civil unrest.
Additionally, six other prominent figures from the former government are also being investigated in the wake of weeks of deadly turmoil in Dhaka.
Mamun Mia, a lawyer representing a private citizen, stated that the Dhaka court has directed the police to file a murder case against the accused individuals. This marks the beginning of a criminal inquiry under Bangladeshi law.
Ms. Hasina resigned and departed the country earlier this month, seeking refuge in India due to the political instability. Over 400 people were killed during the protests against her, many of whom were reportedly shot by police on her orders.
The murder case was initiated by businessman Amir Hamza in July, following the shooting of local grocer Abu Saeed in the head while he was crossing the road.
He told a magistrate’s court that on 19 July, students were holding a peaceful protest, and police had fired indiscriminately on the crowd, according to BBC Bangla.
The former Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader is among those being investigated.
