The Afashio/ Iyora Community at Etsako West Local Government area of Edo has appealed to the state government to check the worsening gully erosion in the area.
Mr Francis Izuagbe, the Chairman, Afashio Development Association, made the plead in an interview with the Newsmen on Monday. Izuagbe explained that properties and lives of members of that neighborhood were at stake if urgent steps weren’t taken to deal with the issue now.
He explained that many members at the area could lose their sources of livelihood if the gully erosion was permitted to deteriorate. “We are calling on the state government to come to our aid as our community is being threatened by gully erosion,’’ he explained. Izuagbe said communal efforts had been in use over the years, but to no avail.
“The erosion has been persistently managed by the Afashio community over the years.
“The gully erosion is becoming more of a threat after the heavy downpour which hit residents unexpectedly, thereby sending flood into houses.
“The gully erosion is as a result of the bad drainage channel from Afowa town hall to Afashio/Iyora, thereby creating gullies in the community.
“We are appealing to the government to take urgent steps to avoid impending calamity in our community,’’ he explained.
