Farmer drowns in Kaduna boat accident
A farmer drowned on Sunday September 18, after a boat accident in Kabala Doki, a community in Kaduna North LGA.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the incident occurred at about 8:30 am on Sunday when the victim, named Umar, paddled the canoe to help some people that were stranded on the other side of the river.
Murtala Kabala, a local resident, told the publication that while the victim (Umar) who is popular in the community and owns a farm close to the river drowned, all others onboard survived.
“It is worrisome because Umar knew how to swim and had been at the riverside for years farming. This is why we were surprised to learn he got drowned in the same river while trying to rescue people who got stranded on the other side of the river. May Allah forgive his shortcomings.”
Muktar Baloni (Kaduna North Local Government Chairman), confirmed that the incident occurred and said that the body of the farmer is yet to be recovered.
Baloni also lamented that a portion of the local government area got flooded, adding that the council was compiling details of affected houses to assist the victims.
