The gunman who left 17 dead in the Florida mass school shooting was a “troubled” former student obsessed with guns.
Police arrested 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz at the scene without incident.
Wearing a gas mask, he threw numerous smoke grenades into the corridors on the third floor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland shortly before students were due to leave for the day.
It caused the fire alarms to go off and Cruz opened fire as they fled classroom armed with an AR-15 rifle and “countless” magazines of ammunition, police said.
The same weapon has been used in several other recent US shooting atrocities including massacres in Las Vegas, Pulse nightclub and Sandy Hook school.
When the shooting finally stopped, news helicopters captured footage of Cruz being handcuffed and led into a police patrol car.
ESPN’s Josh Cohen later shared a photo he said was taken by a member of law enforcement of the moment Cruz was arrested.
He’s wearing a maroon Reserve Officers’ Training Corps t-shirt, black trousers and seemed to have dyed his hair orange.
Cruz was later led out of the hospital wearing a white gown.
