“I was told to take my style of music elsewhere” – Ladipoe
Nigerian hip-hop artist Ladipo Eso, widely known as Ladipoe, has opened up about the early challenges and eventual triumphs in his music career.
In a recent interview, the Mavin Records artist recalled how industry insiders initially doubted his potential for success in Nigeria due to his distinctive musical style.
Ladipoe revealed that anonymous figures in the music industry tried to discourage him by criticizing his hip-hop style, suggesting he relocate if he wanted to pursue a music career.
Despite the skepticism, Ladipoe decided to stay and pursue his passion, a choice that has proven to be highly rewarding.
He mentioned that all his songs have exceeded his expectations, proving his critics wrong.
Reflecting on his journey, Ladipoe expressed pride in his progress but admitted he is not entirely satisfied with his achievements.
In his words;
“All my songs have exceeded my expectations. When I first started making music, I was told that because of my style, no one would ever listen to my songs here in Nigeria and that I should try elsewhere in the world.”
“It is human nature for satisfaction to be elusive. I feel this applies twice as much to creative people, such as artists like myself. I am grateful but not satisfied.”
Ladipoe also shared a memorable, humbling experience from his early career.
“I remember once, early in my career, I came on stage with so much energy and shouted into the microphone, ‘Who is ready for some more hip-hop’?. Meanwhile, that was a time when hip-hop music was facing serious fluctuation in its appeal.
“The overwhelming response from the crowd was, ‘no’. I remember being so deflated. To make matters worse, my band started off by playing the wrong song first, which further demoralized me. It was terrible. But, I look back now and laugh. I am grateful for growth,” he added.
