India’s Modi could win a third term, polls predict
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure a third consecutive term in office, according to exit polls.
Analysts caution that these polls, released by various news agencies, have a history of inaccuracies and potential biases.
Despite this, the polls indicate that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in the general election.
The BJP, along with the main opposition Congress party and regional rivals, engaged in a vigorous campaign across seven phases of polling.
The results are set to be announced on June 4.
A party or coalition requires 272 seats in parliament to form a government.
Exit polls suggest that the BJP-led coalition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is on track to surpass this threshold, potentially securing around two-thirds of the seats.
In his first comments after voting ended, Mr Modi claimed victory without referring to the exit polls.
“I can say with confidence that the people of India have voted in record numbers to re-elect the NDA government,” he wrote on X, without providing evidence of his claim.
