Justin Timberlake arrested on driving while intoxicated charge

Justin Timberlake, the renowned pop star, was detained in New York for driving under the influence, according to local officials who informed the BBC.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office stated that Timberlake was arrested and formally charged on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred in Sag Harbor, a prestigious village in the Hamptons, a favored summer spot for celebrities on Long Island.

Following the formal charges, Timberlake was released without bail, as confirmed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The BBC reached out to Timberlake’s attorney for a statement.

According to a charging document, Timberlake was arrested after midnight (05:37 BST) when police pulled over his grey BMW for running a stop sign and drifting across lanes.

Officers noted that Timberlake had “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and emitted a strong smell of alcohol from his breath.

His speech was slow, and he performed poorly on sobriety tests administered by the officers.

Reports indicate he refused to take a breathalyser test.

When stopped, Timberlake allegedly told the officer, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” as reported by CBS News, a partner of BBC’s US operations.

Timberlake is scheduled to appear virtually in Sag Harbor court on July 26.

His lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., informed CBS News on Tuesday evening that he “will vigorously defend his client and is currently engaged in the Discovery process with the District Attorney’s Office.”

At 43 years old, Timberlake was preparing for a global tour promoting his sixth album, Everything I Thought It Was.

Formerly a member of the popular boy band NSYNC, Timberlake has also achieved success as an actor, songwriter, and one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
