Lightning kills 13 children at Uganda refugee camp
A lightning strike at a refugee camp in Uganda has killed 13 children and one adult, according to police.
The victims were reportedly attending a church service on Saturday evening when the lightning struck, leaving 34 others injured.
The incident took place at Palabek Refugee Settlement in the country’s northwest, an area recently affected by heavy rains and frequent thunderstorms.
Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told BBC News that the adult killed was 21 years old but did not disclose the exact ages of the children.
Palabek Refugee Settlement, home to over 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers—many from neighboring South Sudan—has been managed with support from the UN refugee agency.
Four years ago, lightning killed 10 children in the city of Arua, also in north-western Uganda.
The children were struck while taking a break from a game of football.
