Mahsa Amini: Protesters mark one year since the death of an Iranian student
The passing of Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, following her detention by Iran’s morality police, ignited a wave of protests that were unprecedented in the country’s history.
In commemoration of the first anniversary of her tragic demise, numerous individuals from all corners of the globe have taken to the streets to express their solidarity and demand justice.
Within Iran, Amjad, the father of Ms. Amini, was apprehended by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and cautioned against observing the anniversary of his daughter’s death, as reported by various human rights organizations, including the Kurdish support group Hengaw and the Norway-based Iran Human Rights. Subsequently, he was released from detention.
Contrary to these reports, the Iranian state news agency IRNA refuted these claims and later stated that security forces had thwarted an alleged attempt to harm Amjad Amini.
Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network has reported that family members of other people killed during the protests sparked by Ms Amini’s death have also been arrested or threatened.
