Mexico: Eight Chinese migrants found dead on beach
Officials report that the remains of eight Chinese citizens were discovered on a beach in the Mexican state of Oaxaca following a boating accident. The incident occurred along a path commonly used by undocumented migrants attempting to reach the United States.
The group, consisting of seven women and one man, was aboard a vessel operated by a Mexican individual departing from Chiapas state, near the Guatemalan border, on Thursday. One survivor was accounted for, though details regarding the boat’s captain remain unclear.
Authorities from the prosecutor’s office in Oaxaca disclosed that the bodies were located near Playa Vicente’s shoreline. They have initiated an investigation into the accident and are collaborating with the Chinese embassy in Mexico to establish the victims’ identities.
The influx of migrants endeavoring to cross into the US via Mexico has shown an upward trend in recent years. Since 2021, over 6.3 million individuals have entered the US unlawfully. This surge, commencing in 2018, is predominantly attributed to Central Americans seeking refuge from multifaceted crises, including gang violence, poverty, political oppression, and natural calamities.
Among non-American migrant groups, Chinese nationals notably contribute to the escalating numbers. A growing faction aims to flee economic instability and political suppression within China. Last year, over 37,000 Chinese citizens were apprehended at the US-Mexico border, marking a stark increase compared to figures from two years prior.
Mexico’s immigration resources and shelters have struggled to accommodate the mounting influx of migrants.
