Moment vibrating phones alerted UN to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
UN ambassadors featured in a new BBC documentary recount the moment they were informed of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The event unfolded during an emergency session of the UN Security Council aimed at preventing such a dire escalation.
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, admitted he too was taken aback by the news.
Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, expressed, “The primary objective of the UN is to uphold peace… when a permanent member of the Security Council invades another nation… you witness your mission crumbling.”
