Mystery drones seen over three US air bases in UK
Unidentified drones have been observed over three military airbases in the UK, confirmed the United States Air Force (USAF).
The sightings, which occurred between Wednesday and Friday, involved “small unmanned aerial systems” at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, as well as RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.
The USAF, which operates these bases, stated that it is currently unclear whether the drones posed a hostile threat. The USAF declined to comment on whether defensive measures were employed but emphasized its right to safeguard its installations.
A spokesperson for USAF Europe confirmed the presence of unmanned aerial systems near the three bases, noting that their number and size varied. The drones were monitored, and base leaders assessed that none of the incidents affected personnel or critical infrastructure.
“For operational security reasons, we do not disclose specific protection measures, but we maintain the right to defend our installations,” the spokesperson said. “We are continuing to monitor our airspace in collaboration with local authorities and partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.”
RAF Mildenhall houses the USAF’s 100th Air Refueling Wing, RAF Lakenheath hosts F-35A and F-15E fighter jets, and RAF Feltwell handles logistics and provides housing for military personnel.
The UK Ministry of Defence, which owns the bases, issued a statement saying, “We take threats seriously and uphold stringent security protocols at our defence sites.”
“This includes counter drone security capabilities.
“We won’t comment further on security procedures.”
