Nancy Pelosi in hospital after injury on overseas trip
Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after suffering an injury during an official visit to Luxembourg, her office confirmed on Friday.
Reports from US media indicate that Pelosi injured her hip after tripping and falling at an event, according to unnamed sources with knowledge of the situation.
At 84 years old, Pelosi is “currently receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals,” stated her spokesperson Ian Krager.
The Democratic congresswoman, who still represents California, was in Luxembourg as part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Krager added that Pelosi “looks forward to returning to the US soon” and is continuing her work from the hospital.
A prominent figure in US politics, Pelosi’s career spans seven presidential administrations. She first served as House speaker from 2007 to 2011, a role second in line to the presidency after the vice president, and regained the position in 2019 when her party regained control of the House. After stepping down from the role in 2023 following two terms, she remains an active member of the House and was re-elected for another two-year term last month.
Pelosi was part of a bipartisan delegation of 18 House members traveling to Luxembourg, as confirmed by House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office. The delegation is set to participate in the anniversary events alongside veterans, their families, and military officials.
Due to her injury, Pelosi will no longer be able to attend the remainder of the events, according to her spokesperson.
The news of Pelosi’s injury follows closely on the heels of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who suffered a sprained wrist and facial cuts after falling at the US Capitol just days earlier.
