Niger government suspends mining in 3 LGAs
Due to security concerns in the three LGAs, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello suspended all mining activities at Shiroro and Munya local government areas in Niger state.
This attack comes a week after bandits attacked Ajata Aboki, a Shiroro LG mining site. They killed many soldiers and police officers as well as workers and four Chinese expatriates.
Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, Secretary to State Government, made the announcement. He stated that the suspension would continue until further notice.
He said that any mining operator found engaging in mining activities within the mentioned areas would be subject to the full force of the law.
The statement was as follows:
“The state government has directed security agencies in the state to profile all mining sites in the affected local governments with a view to ascertaining their genuineness.”
He assured the people of the state that government would not scale down pressure on the bandits, kidnappers, cattle rustlers, and other criminal elements until they were flushed out of the state.
The state government also asked people of the state to be security-conscious and report all suspicious characters, movements, or objects in their communities to security agents.
