Omoni Oboli explains why she avoids meddling in her son’s marriage
Nollywood actress and director Omoni Oboli recently shared why she chooses not to interfere in her son’s marriage, prioritizing her daughter-in-law’s independence even if she has concerns.
During her appearance on the Dear Ife podcast with Ifedayo Agoro, the mother of three discussed her approach to respecting both her son and daughter-in-law’s relationship.
Oboli explained that she tries to understand her daughter-in-law’s perspective by putting herself in her place rather than relying solely on her own views.
Reflecting on her own life, she recalled marrying at 21—the same age her daughter-in-law married her son—and being quite strong-willed. With this understanding, she recognizes that her daughter-in-law likely values her autonomy and would prefer not to be controlled.
The seasoned actress also emphasized the importance of sons being able to communicate openly with their mothers on behalf of their wives, reinforcing healthy family boundaries and mutual respect.
“There’s been a few times when my son has come to meet me to say, ‘Mum, Marelle does not like that’ and I have to catch myself back and say ‘Oh, I didn’t mean it that way.’ And it’s okay. So, the fact that your child cannot come to you to say ‘my wife doesn’t like this’, that’s a problem in itself,” she stated.
“I think, first things first, people need to understand and realise that this is now another family. Yes, they are still a part of your family but they now have their own family,” she opined.
