One dead, dozens injured in Ohio mass shooting
A mass shooting in Ohio has resulted in the death of one person and left at least 24 others injured. The incident occurred shortly after midnight local time in Akron.
Law enforcement officers, responding to the scene near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue, found numerous bullet casings and a firearm, according to local media accounts.
The Akron Police Department has stated that no suspects have been apprehended or identified, and an investigation is underway.
Confirming the details to the BBC, the department disclosed that among the 25 individuals shot, one fatality has been reported. While many of the injuries are described as non-life-threatening, some victims are in critical condition.
Akron’s Mayor, Shammas Malik, and Police Chief Brian Harding issued a joint statement on social media expressing determination to hold those accountable for the violence. “Our community is grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act,” they remarked.
“With numerous casualties, the anguish resonates deeply throughout Akron as we seek understanding.” They also encouraged individuals with any information regarding the shooting to come forward anonymously.
“We need you to speak up to prevent further violence and retaliation.
“Our city government and our Akron Police Department will continue to prioritize public safety as our number one concern as we aim to end gun violence in our community.”
