“Relationship in our generation is all about financial gains” – Singer, Rema
Divine Ikubor (also known as Rema), a Nigerian singer-songwriter, shared his thoughts on today’s relationships.
During an interview on the i-D Meets Podcast, the “Dumebi’ crooner stated that he believes relationships today are based solely on financial gains rather than genuine love.
Rema explained that one of his favorite lyrics on his debut album Rave & Roses is ‘love’s not a source for income’, which was inspired by his own experiences. He explained that he could not define love because everyone has to live their own version.
He said that many of the relationships in our society today are based solely on materialistic gain, which he found disheartening. Rema said he wanted to experience his own version of love as he has not experienced it before.
“My favourite lyric in my album [is] ‘Love is not a source of income’. It came from my actual experience. A lot of relationships in our new generation is just really all about the gains.”
It’s painful that I can’t really define love. You’ve to live your own version. I have not lived my version. I’m waiting for it though.” He said.
