Seun Kuti reportedly crowned ‘General Overseer’ in prison, leads prayer sessions
Seun Kuti, the embattled Afrobeats singer, is reportedly having a difficult time in detention at the State Criminal, Investigations, and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, where he’s been crowned “General Overseer” after being remanded by a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court.
Vanguard reported that Seun was taken to a cell with other suspected criminals after the remand was issued. Seun’s first shock was when he was told to stand by the leader of inmates, who had a deep baritone voice with a hoarse tone.
He was subsequently rejected by other inmates who began banging on their metal protective door, asking that he be taken out of the cell.
The singer started negotiating with the guards after noticing that they were not paying much attention. He was allegedly able to call his wife and give her N25,000, which he gave to the leader of the inmates.
The inmates welcomed him after he gave them the money and offered him a place to sit. Seun Kuti was furious and went on a hunger strike. He also refused food that his wife brought. After a day-and-a-half, he began to eat again.
According to reports, the singer was now crowned General Overseer and a Bible was given to him. According to the publication, the singer leads the prisoners in prayer sessions when the situation calls for it. Then they all sing: “GO, GO.”
When a journalist visited Panti around 2:30 pm yesterday, May 19, Seun was seen clutching the Bible tightly with his left hand while climbing the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge, Waheed Ayilara. He was later led down the stairs, back into the cell.
