Toke Makinwa lists relationship red flags she would never overlook
Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa recently shared the relationship red flags she considers non-negotiable, detailing behaviors that would make her cut ties with a man immediately.
Speaking in an interview with UK-based content creator Madame Joyce, Makinwa explained that certain attitudes are clear deal-breakers for her.
“If I meet a guy who badmouths his ex, he’ll never hear from me again. If he’s constantly talking about her, he’s clearly not over her, and he’s not going to hear from me. If he compares me to his past, he’s not going to hear from me,” she said.
Makinwa urged women to be cautious around men who criticize their former partners, adding, “What he did to his ex, he could do twice as much to you.”
She noted that men often describe their exes as “crazy” to shift blame, masking their own responsibility in the relationship’s issues.
“Your vagina is not made of gold, what he did to his ex, he can do times two to you. While you’re with him, it’s easy for a guy to paint a picture saying ‘she was crazy.’ every girl is crazy in every guy’s book, if my exes talk about me to you, you’d think I’m the mad one because everyone would tell story. I always tell women that nigga going on about how crazy she is is the one that made her crazy,” she added.
Madame Joyce echoed this thought, calling the belief that certain situations “could never happen to us” a trap. Toke Makinwa shared that she no longer uses the phrase “it can never be me,” as life has shown her how easily people can face circumstances they never expected.
“I never say it can never be me because… life would catch you at 6pm that night,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of empathy.
“We’re the greatest judges when it comes to other people, but when it’s our turn, we make a case.”
