“Why I don’t practice law despite studying it” – Funke Akindele
Funke Akindele, a prominent figure in Nollywood, shared the reason behind her decision not to practice law, despite having studied it at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The filmmaker disclosed to BBC Yorùbá that she pursued a law degree to fulfill her late father’s wishes, even though her true passions lay in acting, singing, and dancing.
Akindele explained that her father had always envisioned her becoming a lawyer, and to honor his desire, she pursued legal studies before returning to her artistic pursuits.
While she initially studied law to please her father, Akindele emphasized that she never regretted the decision, as her legal background has positively influenced her creative works.
She expressed a particular fondness for criminal law and the intricate process of investigating and sentencing those who violate the law.
“If you notice, you will see that I usually add up what I have studied in my work. Law and my work can be hand in hand. And I never regretted studying law. But I have not been practicing law.
“Nowadays I have been thinking about it. I can do it.”
