5 Tips to getting the help you need when you are a CEO of your company

As the CEO of a company, it is not uncommon to be faced with unimaginable pressure. The stress of running a company, managing the budget projections, revenue generation, and overseeing all of the production of a product, among other things can be overwhelming at best. This can be especially taxing if you are short on staff members who are trained adequately.

When you are the CEO of the company, you are most likely putting the company’s needs and everyone else’s needs before your own. It is only a matter of time that the stress and pressure will take its toll which is why some leaders find themselves turning to substances as a coping mechanism. In no time at all, it is no surprise that you are dependant on these substances and need them to cope with daily life. As a CEO this can be particularly troublesome and may cause you to avoid getting the help that you need. This article will highlight some tips to help you get the assistance that you desperately need.

  • Take time off. It is imperative that you take some time away from work to focus on you and getting better. Making yourself a priority is paramount to your success in getting help and in feeling better. You will need time away from work in order to be able to distance yourself and find out what interests you so that you can build a life outside of work. You have most likely been so wrapped up in work that you were unable to focus on anything other than your company.
  • Find a helpful therapist. It is not uncommon for a CEO to find a therapist that they can confide in and share the stressors that are causing them to turn to substances to cope. In fact, there are therapists that specialize in addiction psychiatry and they can help you get to the root of the problem and will help you instill healthy coping mechanisms that will help you deal with stress.
  • Improve your diet. Focusing on remaining healthy is a great way to control the urge to relapse. Improving your diet will help you physically as well as mentally.
  • Work on your fitness. In addition to eating a healthier, well-rounded diet, be sure to give your body time to exercise as it can relieve stress naturally and release serotonin in your brain which will make you feel happier.

Avoid giving up at all costs. This is going to be quite a process and one that you do not have to go alone. There are support groups, therapists, friends and family that will want to surround you and help you with this process. Do not be ashamed and avoid at all costs, the urge to give up. This is easier said than done but if you have a misstep, brush yourself off and get back on track. Put one foot in front of the other and remember that you are better off than you were yesterday.
