An educationist in Ogun State, Mrs. Obiageli Augustina-Obiekwe, has lamented that many parents have abandoned the upbringing of their children. She called for urgent steps to remedy the situation.
Augustina-Obiekwe, who is also the proprietress of Pristine Montessori Academy, Arepo, said there was the need for all stakeholders in the education sector to play their roles to avoid a decadent society.
Augustina-Obiekwe, who spoke on the sideline of a children’s programme at the school, also urged the Ogun State Government to build a public school in the community.
“Parents should not just leave their children in the hands of teachers. All stakeholders need to come together to assist in the upbringing of these children. We need to play our roles so that these kids can succeed in the future.
“The government should also support education by providing all the necessary facilities, especially for the public schools. There is no public school in Arepo, and this can affect the children of the less privileged.
“The problem of social media is really eating deep into children’s education. We need to find a way to reduce its influence on the children,” she added.
The educationist, who said the school was founded to nurture children in a godly way, said that public schoolteachers should be motivated.
“The government should also support education by providing all the necessary facilities,” he added.
