Sri Lanka: Seven killed as motorsports race car hits crowd
According to local media reports, a tragic incident occurred during a motor race in Sri Lanka where a car veered off track, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals.
The accident, which took place at the Fox Hill Supercross event in Diyatalawa on Sunday, also left at least 18 others injured. The casualties included four race officials and spectators, among them an eight-year-old girl, as confirmed by the army.
The race, which was the 28th edition organized by the Sri Lankan military, took place in Diyatalawa where the military has an academy. The event drew a crowd of over 100,000 spectators.
Eyewitness footage captured people rushing to the scene following the accident, prompting the suspension of the event.
Tragically, two of the victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the local military hospital, while some of the injured individuals remain in critical condition.
A police investigation is under way.
