5 Tips to Writing a Creative Essay

Creative Essay

Creative essay writing is beneficial to students in many ways. It is a platform writers can exploit to tap into their creativity and emotions. Creative writers can become great problem solvers, story tellers, critical thinkers, commentators, historians and good communicators.

With great creative writing skills, you can develop good analysis skills to better understand human nature. It takes authentic, interesting and engaging writing to catch the attention of your readers. It’s important for your audience to relate to your story to enjoy reading it.

Moreover, creative writing is a form of therapy that when used properly, can help solve emotional and childhood issues many people have to deal with on a daily basis; it involves self exploration and reflection. Therefore, with all these benefits, it’s important for students to develop exceptional creative writing skills from an early age.

Here are five tips to help you improve your creative writing skills:

Top 5 Tips to Improving Creative Essay Writing

  1. Write a Catchy Introduction

Use action, the unexpected, a conflict or the unusual to write a catchy introduction. The beginning of short stories is always the start of the climax and the end of the essay. Use immediacy and tension to capture your readers’ attention. In today’s fast-paced world, people don’t have time for boring essays.

They quickly scan essays to determine if it’s something they actually want to read. In fact, most readers go through the first paragraph of essays to decide whether to continue reading or not. Use suspense to engage your readers and motivate them to read the entire essay.

  1. Develop Your Characters

Develop complex personalities in your writing for your readers to see what they are like. Know your character’s personal details, hobbies, marital status, favorite colors and foods, social networks, sleep patterns, etc. Although your readers only need basic information about your characters, you need to know them in and out.

Describe the appearance of your character to help readers envision them visually. Use actions to bring out who your characters are in terms of behavior. Make use of speech to develop your characters, and thoughts to express their fears, memories and hope.

  1. Be Creative

Creative writing is all about being imaginative and writing about the ordinary, something unusual. Use good and creative writing words and phrases to write a creative story. Learn to use similes, idioms, metaphors and personification to give life to your writing.

  1. Develop a Plot

Create the storyline of your writing; the actions or what happens. Come up with a series of events to bring out the thematic, dramatic and emotional importance of your writing. Use conflict, transition, climax, flashback, an explosion or a thrilling event, complication, exposition, falling action and resolution to develop a plot.

If you’re having challenges, brainstorm on the actions that can help you develop a good plot for your story.

  1. Build a Climax

The climax of your writing is its turning point, the most dramatic and exciting moment every reader often looks up to. It is the scene or moment your readers can’t wait to reach and make a finding. Use conflict to develop a good climax.

You also need to choose a point of view, use context and setting, write meaningful dialogue, create tension and conflict and give a resolution in your story to write an exceptional creative essay.
