3 Tips to choosing an eye doctor

For you to know how to pick the right eye doctor for your eye problems, you first need to know what eye doctors do. This will help you determine the type of care you need when selecting an eye doctor.

There are two different types of eye doctors, which is optometrists and ophthalmologists. While ophthalmologists are more general and can treat almost all types of eye diseases as well as perform eye surgeries, optometrists can only treat some of them and cannot perform eye surgeries. Both, however, can prescribe medication that will help you improve your eye condition.

Optometrists require over four more years in Optometry school, although they can participate in programs specializing in some types of eye disease. Ophthalmologists, on the other hand, have to attend college, afterward, spend four years in Medical School, and then finally spend four more years in a residency program where they get to specialize in a field that they love.

Apart from knowing the differences between the two, use the below tips when choosing an eye doctor.

Check for experience and credentials

Experience is key when choosing an eye doctor. You need an eye doctor who can find a solution to your eye problem or condition and ensure that you get the right treatment. An eye doctor who is experienced will ensure that you get good results. Check for how long the doctor has been operating, the number of procedures performed as well as their credentials.

To find out more about their level of expertise ask questions which include the procedures they perform or if there is any risk of complications. With the necessary training and skills to treat vision-related conditions and eye problems, you will be sure that you are receiving the right care.

The doctor should not have any history of malpractice claims or disciplinary actions. Alternatively, you can check the eye doctor’s optometry school, training, certifications, and malpractice and disciplinary history to clarify.

The doctor’s availability

Find out the times the eye doctor is available in case you have an emergency and need to be attended to fast. Are they available in the evening and weekend hours or are they only open on weekdays. Even if they are not available, can they work you into their schedule when it comes to urgent cases? Find the best eye hospital in Delhi and get more information about the services offered.

Get referrals and look at reviews

Although you might find several eye doctors claiming to be experts in the field, it is important to be sure about the services that they offer and how credible they are. Your family, friends, and the current doctor might also have recommendations. Seek referrals from friends and relatives as well as check reviews from previous patients.

Just like your body, your eye health is also very important. Having chosen the eye doctor that you feel is right, find out more about your checkups. Try out different eye doctors in case the first one does not meet your expectations until you find one that you can trust with your eye problems.
