4 Tips to Making your own clothes

4 Tips to Making your own clothes

If you are passionate about sewing, then making your own clothes can be really fun and rewarding. All you need to have is the right tools and the interest. It is a great way to venture into new fashion and style, only that you design the clothes for yourself and not someone else. You get to learn a few basics about sewing while saving money you would have otherwise paid your tailor. Making your own clothes can have both advantages and disadvantages and it can be difficult to begin when you know little about sewing. If you prefer making your own clothes, here are a few tips to consider;

Get a quality sewing machine

If you are considering making your own clothes, you need to get yourself a good machine. Just as you get attached to gadgets like your phone, you will find yourself getting attached to your sewing machine over time. If your machine is going to serve you well, the attachment will definitely grow, so you will want to get yourself one that will serve you for the longest period of time. With the market flocked with different brands, there are, however, a few top selling brands that are worth spending on.

Go freestyle

Cloth making obviously involves designing, which is basically art. This means that sewing is itself an art which has no specific way of doing. Let your imagination take you places and don’t be afraid to experiment on new styles and ideas you have in your head. What’s more, if you are making the clothes for yourself then you can always try to fit them after different stages to see how they fit and what adjustments to make.

Find quality fabric

When making your own clothes, you want to make sure that you use quality fabric. In addition to lasting longer, a quality piece of fabric will make your attire look magnificent. With the many social media platforms available today, you can find different online stores that sell good quality fabrics. Make use of these platforms especially Pinterest and Instagram and ask your friends to recommend reliable fabric stores they know of.

Embrace your mistakes

You will probably make a few mistakes when sewing but that does not mean you should give up on what you were making. Sewing is an art, and mistakes are a way to learn a few things and get creative. Also, there is no rule book to sewing so, embrace your mistakes and try to make the most out of it. With the right tools, a good sewing machine, and amazing fabrics, you can correct any mistake and make your cloth look exactly how you want it to look like.

Bottom line

It is indisputable that making your own clothes will not give the same results as what you would buy from a professional tailor. However, you can make it fun and create a unique fashion statement for yourself. On the downside, it can be very discouraging and time-consuming if you don’t have the passion to do it.  Get yourself the right equipment and attitude and have a good time while at it.
