Asparagus Allergy – Symptoms and Treatment

Asparagus allergy happens when this spring vegetable belonging to the exact same family as that of garlic and onions, is consumed uncooked. Two proteins specifically Aspa o 1.01 and Aspa o 1.02 are discovered to function as allergens (chemicals that cause allergies) of asparagus. This report attempts to obtain additional insight about the signs and treatment of this allergy due to this vegetable.

Asparagus Allergy Symptoms

There are two ways in which the body develops signs of the allergy. They are: allergic contact dermatitis and IgE mediated allergy.
In the former scenario, the individual’s skin comes from direct contact with the vegetable. It’s the most frequently reported means of obtaining the indicators of the allergy.
IgE mediated allergy is regarded as reported quite less. IgE is a compound protein which aids the pure defense system of the human body (technically referred to as the Immune system) in identifying and killing germs and viruses.

When IgE mistakenly targets the nutrients of this vegetable as harmful, it initiates some undesirable reactions in the body known as IgE mediated allergy of asparagus.

Research studies done on this vegetable in universities of Pamplona and Madrid in Spain have found the following symptoms of this asparagus allergy:

  • Severe respiratory problems like asthma
  • Anaphylaxis – a severe allergic reaction affecting the whole body
  • Swelling and irritation in the internal areas of the nose
  • Occupational asthma caused by exposure of asparagus due to work
  • Oral allergy syndrome – group of allergic reactions affecting the mouth

Diagnosis of Asparagus Allergy: Skin prick and patch tests are just two diagnostic methods that find out the indicators of the allergy. In these two evaluations, the allergen was designed to come in touch with the individual’s skin and the reaction is analyzed in a small, controlled way of verifying the allergy symptoms.

In the prior evaluation, allergen is brought into the skin by pricking it with a needle containing the allergen. In the latter evaluation, a patch containing the allergen is applied on the skin.

Asparagus Allergy Treatment:

No allergies is reported when the vegetable is absorbed after cooking it. It’s because the allergens can’t endure the extreme heat.

In the majority of the scenarios, skin contact or inhalation of these allergens can be found to trigger the problem. So, the best approach to eliminate this allergy is to keep away from asparagus when it’s verified that your system is sensitive to it.
